Cannabis news in Atlantic City NJ

The legalization of recreational cannabis has been a hot button issue in New Jersey for the last few years. There have been some interesting developments with regards to this particular topic in the past year or so.

First New Jersey Cannabis Convention

On September 14th, 2019, Atlantic City hosted the first ever cannabis convention in the state of New Jersey. This took place at the Atlantic Convention Center, drawing over 1,500 activists and plain old cannabis enthusiasts.

Around 100 different companies had booths set up at the convention, including NJ Cannabis Insider. These businesses sold everything from grow lights to various other supplies.

There were also two keynote speakers, including businessman Steve Schain, and Monica Taing, representing Doctors for Cannabis Regulation. This convention was a landmark event in the state’s history, as well as a sign that legalization might be far away.

Programming for this convention included discussion about regulations, research, and opportunities in the Mid Atlantic. Tony Gallo of Sapphire Risk Consulting also stepped up to the podium to discuss getting employed within the cannabis industry.

A “Cannabiz workship” was also held at this convention for those who want to work in this industry. The convention stretched from September 14th to the 15th, drawing in lots of different people from all over the state and beyond.

City Council Opposes Marijuana Businesses

As of December 6th, 2019, the Atlantic City Council announced that it would consider preventing marijuana businesses from setting up shop on the boardwalk. These businesses would not be allowed anywhere near the city’s casinos.

So far, the city council has not specified what it considers to be a “marijuana business”. This has definitely raised concerns among those who are legally able to use marijuana for medicinal purposes.

The closest marijuana dispensary for patients is located in Egg Harbor Township, which is about 10 miles from Atlantic City.

Support for Marijuana Businesses

Egg Harbor Township recently sent out official letters supporting four different companies that are trying to open up cannabis businesses in the area.

While 50 different towns in New Jersey have stated that they don’t want cannabis sold within their borders, there seems to be a lot of support here. It is unclear as to whether or not the new ordinance will pass, but there is significant opposition. Protests from both businesses and citizens throughout the area have made this very clear.
